Gary Fox

Gary Fox studied graphic fine art at the Pretoria Technikon Art School in South Africa from 1978 to 1980. His diverse curriculum included painting, jewelry design, drawing, technical and conceptual design, as well as various printmaking techniques, such as etching, lithography, and silk screening.

Early in his artistic career, Gary's exceptional talent for portraiture gained significant recognition in South Africa. In 1994, Gary was commissioned to paint a portrait of Nelson Mandela to commemorate his inauguration as President of South Africa. The painting depicts Mandela in 1992, during his appointment as Chancellor of the University of the North (now the University of Limpopo). The painting was displayed in the Union Buildings in Pretoria for many years, and is now hanging in the official Nelson Mandela Museum. Gary was also commissioned by the government of Swaziland to paint a portrait of His Majesty King Mswati III in 1993. Over the years, Fox has completed numerous portrait commissions, establishing a reputation for his distinctive and highly regarded style.

Fox's work has been showcased in galleries and exhibitions across South Africa and the United States. A significant portion of his portfolio focuses on African wildlife, created with oils on canvas, and his unique impressionistic style captures the movement, color, and drama of the natural world. Fox often emphasizes that his artwork tells a story that goes beyond what’s immediately visible on the canvas, inviting viewers to explore deeper layers of meaning.
